Attack on tourists in Hampi: Foreigners are leaving India in fear

The brutal attack on foreign tourists in the famous historical site of Hampi has spread panic. On the night of March 6, some local youths on motorcycles attacked foreign tourists, including some Israelis, in the Sanapur Lake area, 28 kilometers from Hampi. Two female tourists were raped and beaten and the male tourists were thrown into a canal. One tourist died in the incident. The miscreants looted their mobile phones and money.

The police have arrested three people suspected of being involved in the incident. Although the administration has assured the tourists of their safety, the panic is not going away. According to the Karnataka Tourist Guides Association, since the attack, there has been a rush of foreign tourists canceling their bookings. Many are leaving Hampi.

Some tourists said, we wanted to stay here for a few more days. But the incident was really scary and we are worried about our safety. So we are leaving this area now.

The safety of foreign tourists in India has been a subject of concern in the past. Last year, a foreign female tourist was allegedly gang-raped in Jharkhand. In 2017, the rape and murder of a young foreign woman in Goa sparked a nationwide outcry.
